The first thing you need to know – is that there is no right or wrong way to do a résumé. There are numerous options when considering résumé preparation available to you as a job seeker. You can do it yourself, hire a Résumé Writer , use an online service, or employ one of the various résumé writing programs on the market today.
The purpose of a résumé is to get your foot in the door for an interview. With that in mind, the goal is to create a résumé that will set you apart from the rest of the job seekers who may very well opt to do their own utilizing a résumé writing program, or decide to stick with the same format and presentation they have been using for years, with minor updates. Your résumé presentation should be noticed, and stand out from those of your peers in the selection process. A properly prepared résumé will attract attention from employers, not only in the screening phase, but throughout the entire selection process.
RÉSUMÉ PRESENTATIONS AVAILABLE
ENTRY Level – This Résumé is prepared for students, or job seekers just entering the labor market, or those with limited experience.
PROFESSIONAL – This Résumé is provided for job seekers who specialize in a particular career field, have established a foundation for career advancement, are career oriented, and possess approximately five or more years of experience.
EXECUTIVE – This Résumé is designed to strategically portray proven leadership and managerial skills, complimenting your achievements, and aiding you in your pursuit of advancement, or even changing your career direction. This résumé is a sophisticated, powerfully written document which provides a clear and concise message to the recipient, and leaves a distinctive impact.
GOVERNMENT / FEDERAL / SES – This Résumé is prepared with information not typically found in résumés written for civilian or private sector positions. Job Seekers quickly find that the information required for different interests or branches in government vary, and in some cases require previous salaries, supervisor contact information, and hours of obligation. The variety of information, terminology used, and presentation requirements can be confusing. Appropriate portrayal of your KSAs (knowledge, skills and ability) or Executive Core Qualifications (ECQ) is a must when seeking positions in government, and these are presented in the form of a one page narrative for each area of interest (in addition to the actual résumé).
CURRICULUM VITAE (CV) – This Résumé is a lengthy, detailed synopsis of an individual’s education and academic background. Content may include research results, publications, awards, honors, affiliations and other information. A CV is typically used to obtain positions in the academic community, scientific or research industry, and to apply for fellowship or grants.
BASIC RÉSUMÉ INFORMATION
Résumés are prepared in a variety of ways. Each client possesses skills, traits, and accomplishments that must be portrayed in a way that not only appeals to them, but a prospective employer. You will find that elements of all types of résumés are used in creating effective presentations. Some of the most common, easily identified résumé types and their uses are as follows.
CHRONOLOGICAL – This type of Résumé documents work history in a chronological manner, with the most recent employer or position held listed first. The history works backward, and emphasizes career progression.
FUNCTIONAL – This type of Résumé tends to focus on experience, and valuable skills rather than employment history. Major strengths and abilities are highlighted, and may help the user disguise gaps in employment history. This résumé is also used by job seekers making a career change due to ability of this format to focus on skills and abilities valuable to employers.
COMBINATION – This type of Résumé combines elements of both the chronological and functional résumé. Information is compiled and presented in a way which best suits the client's marketability. Skills and abilities are highlighted, and gaps in employment or work history can be disguised. This résumé can both meet and raise expectations of the recipient as to your value.
